725. Why Pendulum Clock stops after Earthquake?

Mechanical clocks that are powered by a descending weight transferring energy through a mechanical escapement at a rate determined by a pendulum can easily be stopped by a moderately strong earthquake because the pendulum may jump off of its support peg or hook, the weight that powers it may jump off its pulley, or the whole clock may come tumbling down and get wrecked. Replacing the weights with a spring makes mechanical clocks more vibration resistant.

726. What exactly happens when a Vegetable is Boiled? Why does it become soft?

There are two components to vegetables that make them crisp, pectin and starch. Pectin, which is basically a type of glue and is also used in jams and jellies for structure, breaks down at 183ºF / 83ºC at a slower rate than the starch cells do. In many cases this allows for more tender vegetables that have a unique texture to them.
There's other things that go on, such as vitamins being leeched into the water, but the temperature affecting the pectin is the reason for the softness.

727. why do Elephant have big Ears?

Elephants are massive animals and generate a lot of heat in their day to day activities.
As they are mammals and therefore warm blooded animals, they have certain adaptations to help them cool off.
However elephants do not possess sweat gland like we humans do so they are unable to cool off by sweating.
What they do possess are those huge ears. The elephant ears has a fine network of blood vessels close to the skin which helps it cool off by radiation. As the atmospheric temperature is usually lower than their body temperature, heat is lost to the atmosphere.
They are also able to increase it's efficiency by fanning themselves with those ears. This can cause a temperature drop of up to 5°C!
That's why African Elephant have big ears than asian one, because Africa has more hot climate than Asia.

728. How Lightning Strikes?

In clouds, small droplets of water or ice can collide as they rise through the atmosphere, knocking off electrons as they do so. Positively charged molecules continue to rise, while the negatively charged electrons settle in the lower part of the cloud. The build-up of electrical charge in the cloud becomes so large that the negatively charged cloud base actually repels electrons in Earth's surface. This electric field eventually becomes strong enough to ionise the air in between, so that current can flow between the positive ground and the negative cloud, which we see as lightning.

729. What is Nuclear Winter?

Nuclear explosions trigger a horrendous chain reaction. The instantaneous outcome is the thermal and blast effect annihilating everything in and around the area. The mushrooming cloud due to the explosion rises high into the stratosphere, spreading out vast quantities of soot and radioactive debris. Some of the debris fall back to the ground as rain out. The soot and other particles suspended in the atmosphere would block sunlight and lower the global temperatures steeply to subzero levels, ushering in wintery conditions over the planet. This sequence of events has been termed as "Nuclear Winter". As a consequence, photosynthesis would stop leading to the destruction of all green plants.

730. Why do they fill Airplane tires with Nitrogen?

Aircraft tires are filled with nitrogen because nitrogen gas is mostly inert, meaning that it requires more energy to react with other substances. This is important because at elevated temperatures, oxygen can react with rubber. Oxidized rubber is weaker than non-oxidized rubber, and weaker tires are not preferred.
Oxygen diffuses through rubber much faster than nitrogen. This means that tires filled with 95% nitrogen (the standard percentage of nitrogen gas for inflation purposes) will maintain pressure longer. This leads to less maintenance, which lowers costs.

The Super Blue Blood Moon: The term “Blood Moon” is used to describe a total lunar eclipse, because it causes the Moon to turn a dark reddish color. This happens whenever the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon falls into our planet’s shadow, or umbra. The Moon doesn’t go completely dark, though: the Sun’s light still manages to shine onto the lunar surface, but it will appear mostly reddish-orange, thanks to a phenomenon known as “scattering.”

731. Why do wines get aged in oak barrels?

Oak offers three major contributions to wine:

It adds flavor compounds–including aromas of vanilla, clove, smoke and coconut.
It allows the slow ingress of oxygen–a process which makes wine taste smoother and less astringent.
It provides a suitable environment for certain metabolic reactions to occur (specifically Malolactic Fermentation)–which makes wines taste creamier.

733. Why doesn't Glue Stick to its container?

That strong smell that comes out when we open the tube's cap is due to the solvents evaporation, so once they're gone the glue sticks. If a superglue tube is left open for a long time (exposed to air, allowing the water to come in contact with the glue), it's impossible (or almost) to squeeze it out and therefore sticks to the container. You may have noticed that super glue tends to dry out in its container more quickly than white glue. Super glue works differently than white glue. Instead of the polymers in white glue, super glue is made of a chemical called cyanoacrylate. This chemical bonds things together when it reacts with water vapor in the air.

This phenomenon is known as the "Wagon - Wheel" effect. So when a wheel seems to spin in a direction opposite it's actual rotation, it's because each spoke has come up a few degrees shy of the position it occupied when it was last imaged by the camera or with human eye. This is sometimes reffered to as the reverse-rotation effect.

Since 'cc' stands for cubic centimeters, everyone regards it to be the volume of cylinder. But actually it is the Displacement volume of a cylinder(in case of single cylinder engine). In other words it is the volume of the piston travel from TDC to
BDC. It does not includes the clearance volume or the volume of the combustion chamber. The cylinder volume for a single cylinder engine is higher than the 'cc' of the engine.

739. How do Barcodes work?

Barcodes are a machine-readable way of writing letters and numbers. A laser is shone onto the barcode and the refl ected light can be interpreted by the barcode reader. There are many types of barcodes, but the ones most commonly found in supermarkets use a row of lines of different widths. The different widths represent diff erent numbers. In the UK many items are coded with a GTIN – Global Trade Item Number. This allows the manufacturer to print the barcode on the packages. The numbers are unique to that item. The barcode only has a number, but no product information. That is held in a database which the retailer can access at the point of sale. It also means that shops can set their own prices and change them easily.

741. Why are most Passenger Planes Painted White?

The main reason is that it protects the aircraft from the effects of solar radiation. Aircraft struggle to stay cool while loading and unloading passengers at airports in hot countries, and brilliant white paint helps bounce back some of the sunlight. It also helps protect aircraft parts made out of composite materials from damage through ultraviolet radiation, which is substantially higher at altitude.

742. What's the difference between the Blue and Black USB ports?

Black is typically USB 2.0 (High Speed) , but can be as low as USB 1.0. Blue of that shade is typically USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed). Sometimes you’ll see this in red. Red or yellow implies that it remains powered for charging devices regardless of the PC being asleep or shutdown. USB 3.1 usually comes in an aqua blue/green color (teal?), or a weird faded looking plain blue.

743. Why do we get Migraines?

Those who suffer from migraines know they are a constant concern as they are liable to strike at any time. Essentially, a migraine is an intense pain at the front or on one side of the head. This usually takes the form of a heavy throbbing sensation and can last as little as an hour or two and up to a few days. Other symptoms of a migraine include increased sensitivity to light, sound and smell, so isolation in a dark and quiet room often brings relief. Nausea and vomiting is also often reported, with pain sometimes subsiding after the sufferer has been sick. It is thought that migraines occur when levels of serotonin in the brain drop rapidly. This causes blood vessels in the cortex to narrow, which is caused by the brain spasming. The blood vessels widen again in response, causing the intense headache. Emotional upheaval is often cited as a cause for the drop in serotonin in the brain, as is a diet in which blood-sugar levels rise and fall dramatically.

744. Why does Milk go Sour?

As we can see from the composition, the lactic medium contains various types of bacteria. In normal form they are not dangerous for the organism, but over time (especially under the influence of accelerating factors) they start to multiply, transforming lactose into lactic acid. As a result, the acidity of the milk increases, which in its turn causes the protein to fold and liquid to separate into whey and a viscous mass.
